Geography

Sanchong District, New Taipei City is flat throughout, located at the center of Taipei Basin, with 16.32 KM2 of total land areas, northeast adjacent to Mt. Datun peaks, north overlooking Mt. Guanyin, and west near Linkou tableland. The Dahan River winding through the northeast edge of the city from south to north, east joins the Xindian River to the Dansui River, and then to the sea.

The approximate shape throughout Sanchong renders a northeast-southwest diamond vast terrain, west to Xinzhuang District, north to Luzhou and Wugu Districts, east to the Danshui River, bounded to Datung District, Taipei City, and south to Banqiao District across the Dahan River. After a major earthquake occurred in 1694, the most of the entire Taipei Basin subsided to become water flooding. Except the part of Dingkan bordering Touqian, Xinzhuang (Huacheng Road), all areas now attributed to this city have sunk into the “Kangxi Taipei Lake”, called by Mr. Yu Yong-Ho at that time; beside the lake, many flocks of Formosan Sambar Deer, and where Ketagalan set up Pinnonouan, hunting for a living.
